Protection system is the most crucial part for the safe and reliable operation of electrical power systems. Protection devices that are properly working will help to sustain the system safety and to protect the assets from damage. Thus, the commissioning to periodical maintenance testing are needed to ensure the reliable operation of the systems.

Protection relay will measure electrical quantities in the power system and comparing the difference during normal and unusual conditions based on the settings before transmitting command to other protective devices.

As protection relay is use to detect and locate faults, it is very crucial for the protective devices to be checked and calibrated regularly. Align with Electricity Regulations 1994 Part IV Regulation 110 (4), it is stated that any protective relay and device of an installation shall be checked, tested and calibrated by a competent person at least once in every two years, or at any time as directed by the Commission.
